Quite some time ago I reviewed several hair products by the Dutch store HEMA. None of these products were completely Curly Girl Method approved, but they were silicone-free. Since then, HEMA has renewed their hair product line and now all of their hair products are not only silicone-free, but also completely sulfate-free and without waxes or drying alcohols – making them suitable for the Curly Girl Method. On top of that, they are all vegan and the bottles are made from recycled materials.
Een tijd geleden reviewde ik verschillende haarproducten van de HEMA. Geen van deze producten was compleet geschikt voor Curly Girl Methode, maar ze waren silicoonvrij. Ondertussen heeft de HEMA hun complete haarproductenlijn hernieuwd, en nu zijn al hun producten niet alleen silicoonvrij, maar ook compleet sulfaatvrij en zonder waxen en uitdrogende alcoholen – wat ze Curly Girl-vriendelijk maakt. Bovendien zijn ze allemaal veganistisch en worden de flessen gemaakt van gerecyclede materialen.
In this post, I will review several products of their renewed hair product line. I chose to review the products with the same names as the ones I reviewed from their old line: the Everyday shampoo, the Repair & Hydrate conditioner and the Curl Booster. Because the new Repair & Hydrate conditioner does not contain any proteins (contrary to the old Repair conditioner), I also decided to buy the Volume & Shine conditioner which contains hydrolyzed rice protein. The full ingredient list of all these products can be found at the bottom of this post.
In deze post review ik verschillende producten van hun hernieuwde haarproductenlijn. Ik heb ervoor gekozen om de producten te reviewen met dezelfde namen als ik eerder heb gereviewd: de Everyday shampoo, de Repair & Hydrate Conditioner en de Curl Booster. Omdat de nieuwe Repair & Hydrate conditioner geen proteïnen bevat (in tegenstelling tot de oude Repair conditioner), besloot ik om ook de Volume & Shine conditioner te kopen die gehydrolyseerde rijstproteïnen bevat. De ingrediëntenlijsten van al deze producten staan onderaan deze post.
Everyday Shampoo
The new Everyday shampoo is completely different from the old one. Where the old one contained a mild sulfate, sodium coco sulfate, this one does not contain any sulfates at all but uses other cleansing agents. It also contains moringa oil and avocado oil. These oils are good for scalp health and usually aimed at dry hair.
The shampoo smells nice and fresh. It does lather up a bit, but I don’t feel like it cleanses my hair well. It is hard to completely wash my hair with it, and I find that I need to use quite a lot of it – and even then my hair doesn’t always feel clean afterwards.
De nieuwe Everyday shampoo is compleet anders dan de oude. Waar de oude een mild sulfaat bevatte, sodium coco sulfate, bevat deze geen sulfaten maar andere reinigers. Ook bevat de shampoo moringa-olie en avocado-olie, die goed zijn voor je hoofdhuid en meestal bedoeld zijn voor droog haar.
De shampoo ruikt lekker en fris. Hij schuimt een klein beetje, maar ik heb niet het gevoel dat het mijn haar goed schoonmaakt. Het is lastig om mijn haar er goed mee te wassen, en ik merk dat ik er vrij veel van moet gebruiken – en zelfs dan voelt mijn haar niet altijd schoon na het wassen.
I think that it is a good thing that it is becoming more easy to find an affordable sulfate-free shampoo, but unfortunately this shampoo is not working for me. The old Everyday shampoo was one of my favourites and my go-to shampoo when I am not testing out products, so it is a shame it is no longer available. That being said, I think this new shampoo might work better for courser and dryer hair types.
Ik denk dat het goed is dat het steeds makkelijker wordt om een betaalbare sulfaatvrije shampoo te vinden, maar helaas werkt deze shampoo niet voor mij. De oude Everyday shampoo was een van mijn favorieten en mijn go-to shampoo wanneer ik geen producten uittest, dus het is jammer dat deze niet meer verkrijgbaar is. Ondanks dat denk ik dat deze nieuwe shampoo beter kan werken voor dikkere en drogere haartypes.
Repair & Hydrate conditioner
The Repair & Hydrate conditioner is also very different from the old Repair conditioner. It smells like peach and somehow vaguely like paper. It gives my hair a little slip, but not as much as I would like to detangle my hair. It doesn’t make my hair feel very hydrated, and it doesn’t help my curls to clump together, making my hair look frizzy. Unfortunately, this conditioner does not seem to work for my hair, but it might work if you don’t have curly hair or don’t detangle your hair in the shower.
De Repair & Hydrate conditioner verschilt ook erg van de oude Repair conditioner. Hij ruikt naar perzik, en op de een of andere manier vaag naar papier. Hij geeft mijn haar een beetje “slip” of gladheid, maar niet zoveel als ik zou willen om mijn haar te ontklitten. Ook voelt mijn haar niet heel gehydrateerd, en helpt hij niet om mijn krullen te laten vormen, waardoor mijn haar er pluizig uitziet. Helaas lijkt deze conditioner niet voor mijn haar te werken, maar hij zou kunnen werken als je geen krullen hebt of als je je haar niet onder de douche ontklit.
Volume & Shine conditioner
The Volume & Shine conditioner has a sweet, flowery scent to it, which I like better than the Repair & Hydrate conditioner. However, it makes my hair feel quite dry and rough, and it gives very little slip which makes it hard to detangle my hair – although it seems to work a little better if I use a lot of it. It helps a little bit with volume, but because it leaves my hair feeling quite dry and frizzy it doesn’t help with shine. Again, I feel like this conditioner is better suited for non-curly hair types.
De Volume & Shine conditioner heeft een zoete, bloemige geur, die ik fijner vind dan de Repair & Hydrate conditioner. Helaas voelt mijn haar er erg droog en stug van, en geeft hij weinig slip waardoor ik mijn haar niet goed kan ontklitten – hoewel het iets beter lijkt te werken als ik er veel van gebruik. De conditioner helpt een klein beetje met volume, maar omdat mijn haar er wat droog en pluizig van wordt, helpt het niet met glans. Ook deze conditioner is denk ik beter geschikt voor mensen zonder krullen.
Curl Booster
The old HEMA curl booster came in a small jar, whereas this one comes in a small bottle with a pump. The other big difference is that the old one contained wax, which made it not Curly Girl approved – but the new one is completely CG-friendly.
I usually apply the curl booster on damp hair, and have been using it both with and without a gel. I usually use about 3 or 4 pumps. Although I think it works okay, I am not quite getting the results I want: my hair is more wavy than curly and still quite frizzy. My hair has been more wavy for a while not, so this might not be due to the product. It is also possible that the curl booster either doesn’t boost my curls enough, or that it weighs my hair down – but it is hard to tell.
That being said, I think for the price this product is definitely worth trying out if you are on a budget. Although there are slowly more CG-approved products available in drug stores in the Netherlands, it can still be hard to find an affordable styler – and I know there are people who really like this curl booster.
De oude HEMA curl booster zat in een klein potje, maar deze komt in een klein flesje met een pompje. Het andere grote verschil is dat de oude wax bevatte, waardoor hij niet geschikt was voor de Curly Girl Methode – maar de nieuwe is wel compleet CG-vriendelijk.
Ik breng de curl booster meestal aan op handdoekdroog haar, en heb hem zowel met als zonder gel gebruikt. Meestal gebruik ik ongeveer 3 à 4 pompjes. Hoewel de booster op zich prima werkt, krijg ik niet echt de resultaten die ik wil: mijn haar is meer golvend dan krullend en nog vrij pluizig. Mijn haar is al langer meer golvend, dus het kan dat dit niet aan het product ligt. Het is ook mogelijk dat de curl booster mijn krullen niet genoeg boost, of dat het juist mijn haar teveel verzwaart – maar het is moeilijk te zeggen.
Dat gezegd hebbende denk ik dat voor de prijs het zeker waard is om dit product een keer uit te proberen als je een klein budget hebt. Hoewel er in Nederland steeds meer CG-vriendelijke producten verkrijgbaar zijn bij de drogist, kan het nog steeds moeilijk zijn om een betaalbare styler te vinden – en ik weet dat er mensen zijn die deze curl booster erg fijn vinden.
Conclusion
I really wanted to like these products, as I really liked the previous HEMA shampoo and conditioner and loved that they changed them into CG-friendly products. But unfortunately, my hair and these products are just not getting along. I don’t think they are bad products per se, but the shampoo seems better suited for someone with dryer or curlier hair and the conditioners seem better suited for people with less curly hair. The curl booster is the only product that is an improvement from their previous line and I think it could be worth trying if you are looking for an affordable styler.
Ik wilde graag positief zijn over deze producten, omdat ik de vorige HEMA shampoo en conditioner erg fijn vond en heel blij was dat hun haarproducten nu CG-vriendelijk zijn. Maar helaas kunnen mijn haar en deze producten niet zo goed met elkaar overweg. Ik denk niet dat het per se slechte producten zijn, maar de shampoo lijkt beter geschikt voor mensen met droger of krullender haar en de conditioners lijken juist beter geschikt voor mensen met minder krullend haar. De curl booster is het enige product dat een verbetering is ten opzichte van hun vorige lijn, en ik denk dat deze het waard kan zijn om uit te proberen als je op zoek bent naar een betaalbare styler.
