Curlsmith is a very popular brand among curly-haired people and specifically among influencers. All of their products are suitable for use if you follow the Curly Girl Method. Additionally, their products are cruelty-free, vegan and the company is working towards a B-Corp certification, which means they take sustainability and ethical production seriously.
Curlsmith is een enorm populair merk bij mensen met krullen en vooral bij influencers. Al hun producten zijn geschikt voor gebruik als je de Curly Girl Methode volgt. Daarnaast zijn hun producten proefdiervrij, veganistisch, en werkt het bedrijf toe naar een B-Corp certificatie, wat betekent dat ze duurzaamheid en ethische productie serieus nemen.
Curlsmith has several products that are said to be lightweight and work very well for fine hair, so I really wanted to try out this brand. Because their products are a bit on the pricier side, I decided to go for 4 products that come in a travel size: the Weightless Air Dry Cream, Hydro-Style Flexi Jelly, Curl Defining Styling Souffle and the Shine Gel. In this post I will review all of these products.
Curlsmith heeft verschillende producten die een lichte formule schijnen te hebben en daarom goed werken voor fijn haar, dus ik wilde dit merk graag uitproberen. Omdat hun producten aan de duurdere kant zijn, heb ik besloten voor 4 producten te gaan die beschikbaar zijn in reisformaat: de Weightless Air Dry Cream, Hydro-Style Flexi Jelly, Curl Defining Styling Souffle en de Shine Gel. In deze post zal ik al deze producten reviewen.
Weightless Air Dry Cream
The Weightless Air Dry Cream is part of Curlsmith’s Scalp Recipe line, and functions as a lightweight leave-in conditioner. Although it is suitable for all hair types, Curlsmith specifically recommends it for fine hair. It is also supposed to minimize build-up and be very suitable air drying. The cream has a sweet scent that smells good but is also quite strong – although it becomes more subtle when it is in the hair.

Hoewel hij geschikt is voor alle haartypes, beveelt Curlsmith het specifiek aan voor fijn haar. Ook schijnt de cream build-up te voorkomen en is hij geschikt als je je haar aan de lucht laat drogen. De cream heeft een zoete geur, die lekker ruikt maar ook erg sterk is – hoewel het wat subtieler wordt zodra het in het haar zit.
Although the cream is very thin and runny, and definitely feels quite lightweight, it does still have some heavy ingredients like castor oil and shea butter quite high up in the ingredient list. The cream does give my hair some lightweight hydration, but I find that I still have to make sure I use a very small amount of it, or it will still be too heavy for my hair.
Hoewel de cream erg dun en vloeibaar is, en het inderdaad vrij licht aanvoelt, staan er nog steeds wat zware ingrediënten hoog in de lijst, zoals castorolie en shea-boter. De cream geeft mijn haar wat lichte hydratatie, maar ik merk dat ik nog steeds erg weinig moet gebruiken, anders is het nog steeds te zwaar voor mijn haar.
Overall, I think this product can definitely work for both finer and courser hair types, and I know many fine-haired curlies love this leave-in conditioner. For me personally I think it does work fine, but not enough to buy a full size, especially for its price.
Over het algemeen denk ik dat dit product goed kan werken voor zowel dunnere als dikkere haartypes, en ik weet dat veel mensen met fijne krullen deze leave-in conditioner heel fijn vinden. Voor mij persoonlijk denk ik dat het prima werkt, maar niet genoeg om een grote fles te kopen, vooral voor de prijs.
Hydro-Style Flexi Jelly
This medium hold gel is also part of Curlsmith’s Scalp Recipe line, and again it is supposed to be lightweight and a good fit for fine hair. The travel size is a 6 on their 10 point hold scale, and promises “weightless hold” – somehow the full size is a 7, it is unclear to me why. While this gel also contains castor oil as one of the first ingredients, all the other ingredients are actually quite lightweight. It has the same strong scent as the Weightless Air Dry Cream, but also becomes a lot more subtle once you’ve applied it to the hair.

The consistency of this gel is also quite thin and runny. It is extremely easy to distribute over your hands and then apply to your hair evenly. I find that I can use quite a bit of this gel and layer it a couple of times without weighing my hair down. Although this gel is medium hold, I can occasionally create a cast with it which is quite easy to scrunch out once the hair is dry.
De consistentie van deze gel is ook vrij dun en vloeibaar. Het is extreem makkelijk om over de handen te verdelen en dan gelijkmatig over het haar te verdelen. I do quite like this gel, and I like how easy it is to apply. However, I am still not sure if it is worth the price to buy a full size version. I might end up buying it again at some point, but I won’t immediately repurchase.

Curl Defining Styling Souffle
The Curl Defining Styling Souffle is part of Curlsmith’s Moisture Recipe line, so you would think it is too moisturizing for fine hair. However, I’ve often seen it recommended for people with fine hair and it has quite lightweight ingredients. It does still contain avocado oil and shea butter, but those are low in the list. It has an incredibly strong sweet scent, but it also becomes more subtle after applying. This gel is supposed to be a bit softer hold than the Hydro-Style Flexi Jelly, with a 5 out of 10 on the scale, and promises “bouncy hold”.
De Curl Defining Styling Souffle is onderdeel van Curlsmith’s Moisture Recipe lijn, dus je zou denken dat hij te hydraterend is voor fijn haar. Toch heb ik hem vaak aanbevolen gezien voor mensen met fijn haar, en heeft hij vrij lichte ingrediënten. Hij bevat weliswaar avocado-olie en shea-boter, maar die staan laag in de ingrediëntenlijst. De gel heeft een enorm sterke zoete geur, maar hij lijkt ook subtieler te worden in het haar. The gel has a medium jelly-like consistency, and is very easy to spread out over the hands and apply to the hair. Although the gel is supposed to be medium hold, it gives me quite a strong hold and consistently gives me a cast. Because it is supposed to be moisturizing as well, I also decided to try it on its own. However, I found that this left my hair a bit dry and straw-like. But when used with a little bit of leave-in conditioner or curl cream, I absolutely love this gel. It currently is my go-to when I want to be sure my results are going to be good.
De gel heeft een medium gelatine-achtige consistentie, en is makkelijk om over de handen te verspreiden en op het haar aan te brengen. Hoewel de gel een medium stevigheid zou moeten hebben, geeft het me een vrij sterke hold en krijg ik er vrij consistent een cast mee. Omdat de gel ook hydraterend zou moeten zijn, heb ik hem ook als enige styler gebruikt. Daarmee voelde mijn haar echter droog en stro-achtig aan. Maar wanneer ik deze gel gebruik met een klein beetje leave-in conditioner of krullencrème, vind ik hem echt geweldig. Het is momenteel mijn go-to wanneer ik zeker wil weten dat mijn resultaten goed gaan zijn.
Shine Gel
The Shine Gel is part of Curlsmith’s fragrance-free Shine Recipe line, so if you are not a big fan of the strong scent of the other Curlsmith products this line is for you. This gel is not particularly meant for fine hair, but fine hair can really benefit from a hard hold gel to keep the curls in shape. And this gel has a very strong hold, being a 9 on their scale of 10.
De Shine Gel hoort bij Curlsmith’s parfumvrije Shine Recipe lijn, dus als je geen groot fan bent van de sterke geur van de andere Curlsmithproducten is deze lijn voor jou. Deze gel is niet specifiek bedoeld voor fijn haar, maar fijn haar kan veel baat hebben bij een stevige gel om de krullen in vorm te houden. En deze gel heeft een enorm sterke hold, met een 9 op hun schaal van 10.
The consistency of this gel is very thick. I usually dilute it with a little bit of water, because that makes it a lot easier to apply. Despite being a strong hold gel, I have never managed to get a cast with this. It also seems to be quite heavy, and it can weigh down my hair quite easily. I find that this gel works best for me if I use only a very small amount on top of another gel. But if I only use one gel, I prefer something that has a little thinner consistency and is a little less heavy, while still providing a good hold.
De consistentie van deze gel is erg dik. Meestal verdun ik hem met een beetje water, want dat maakt het een stuk makkelijker om aan te brengen. Ondanks dat het een gel is met een sterke hold, is het me nooit gelukt om hier een cast mee te krijgen. Hij lijkt ook vrij zwaar te zijn, en kan mijn haar makkelijk verzwaren. Ik merk dat deze gel het beste voor me werkt als ik een heel klein beetje gebruik bovenop een andere gel. Maar als ik maar één gel gebruik, heb ik liever iets dat wat dunner is en minder zwaar, maar nog steeds goede hold geeft.
Conclusion
All of the Curlsmith products I tried out seem to be high quality products that can work for people with a lot of different hair types. Not all of them get along well enough with my fine, lower density, low porosity hair to purchase them again, but I do like most of these products. If you are interested in these products, I definitely think the travel sizes are worth trying!
Alle Curlsmithproducten die ik heb geprobeerd lijken producten van hoge kwaliteit die kunnen werken voor mensen met verschillende haartypes. Ze kunnen niet allemaal goed genoeg overweg met mijn fijne, dunnere, lage poreuze haar om ze opnieuw te kopen, maar ik vind de meeste van deze producten wel fijn. Als je geïnteresseerd bent in deze producten, denk ik dat het het zeker waard is om de reisversies uit te proberen!
