My experience getting a curly haircut

Although it has been four years now since I started figuring out how to take proper care of my curls, I had never had a curly haircut. I have wanted one for a while, but I could never find a curl salon nearby that cut in a way that I liked – and to be honest, I was a bit scared of getting one too.

But recently, I finally found a salon nearby that has one hairdresser specialized in curls, with actual examples on Instagram that looked great. I had avoided going to the hairdresser for over a year because of the pandemic, but my hair was getting too long and I kept getting split ends. So I finally decided to take the plunge and make an appointment.

When it comes to curly haircuts, there are many different methods, such as the DevaCut, Curlsys and the Global Curl Concept. Some of these methods cut curly hair dry, some cut it wet, and many of them cut the hair curl by curl. The stylist I went to did not use a specific method as far as I know, but she did cut it dry and curl by curl. After washing and styling, she then looked at how it fell and shaped it up a bit.

Before she cut it, she asked what I wanted and I told her I wanted quite some length off and a bit more volume. She then told me what would work for my thin hair and what wouldn’t, and advised me to keep a little more length. After we agreed on how she would cut it, she started cutting. Even before washing and styling, I noticed I really liked the shape in which she cut it. After washing and styling, I was absolutely amazed at how much definition and volume my hair could have.

On the left is a picture of my hair shortly before I got it cut. It is long, brown, wavy curly hair that looks soft and a bit stringy at the ends. On the right is my hair right after I got my curly haircut. It is a lot shorter, curlier, and has a bit of a hard gelcast.

The way she styled it even made me learn new things about how I like to wear my hair. Although my hair looked absolutely amazing, it felt stiff and I couldn’t even get out the gelcast – when usually I rarely even get a cast. On the one hand, this made me realize I prefer slightly softer curls, and I am probably willing to sacrifice some definition, volume and longevity for hair that feels nice and soft. On the other hand, this also confirmed that I have been using way too little gel when styling. I was already experimenting with using larger amounts of gel and more hard hold gels, and I will definitely keep experimenting with that even more. I just need to find the right balance between enough hold and softer curls.

All in all, I absolutely loved my experience getting a curly haircut for the first time. I would definitely recommend everyone with waves or curls to get a curly cut at least once. Search for a salon that does a cut that you like or where you have seen examples you like, and where they give honest advice about what hairstyle looks good on you. Going to a stylist who knows how to treat curls really helps to walk out with a great haircut and a little more knowledge about your own hair.
