One of the easiest ways to try out more expensive curl products on a budget is through samples. This way, you can try out the product first for a much smaller amount of money, and only spend money on the full size product if you know for a fact it will work on you. I have tried out several travel sizes in the past – both from expensive brands like Curlsmith and some lower budget gels – but not every brand offers travel sizes.
Een van de makkelijkste manieren om duurdere krullenproducten uit te proberen met een klein budget is door middel van proefjes. Op deze manier kun je het product uit proberen voor veel minder geld, en hoef je alleen geld te spenderen aan de grote verpakking van het product wanneer je zeker weet dat het voor je werkt. Ik heb in het verleden verschillende reisversies uitgeprobeerd – zowel van dure merken als Curlsmith als wat goedkopere gels – maar niet elk merk verkoopt reisversies.
Fortunately, that doesn’t mean trying out a new product isn’t possible. There are several websites that offer samples of curly hair products, such as Dutch website CGproefjes.nl. I ordered some products from TréLuxe there last year: the Untie The Knot leave-in conditioner, the ReFlex serum and the Hi! Definition gel. In this post I will both review these products and share my experience with using samples.
Gelukkig betekent dat niet dat het niet mogelijk is om een nieuw product uit te proberen. Er zijn verschillende websites die proefjes van krullenproducten aanbieden, zoals de website CGproefjes.nl. Vorig jaar heb ik daar verschillende producten van TréLuxe gekocht: de Untie The Knot leave-in conditioner, de ReFlex serum en de Hi! Definition gel. In deze post zal ik zowel deze producten reviewen als mijn ervaring delen met het gebruiken van samples.
Untie The Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner
The Untie The Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner is a conditioner that can be used as both a leave-in product as well as a rinse-out conditioner. The scent is very different from most products – it reminds me of rooibos tea and cinnamon. Although I’m usually a bigger fan of fresh scents, I really like this one!
De Untie The Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner is een conditioner die gebruikt kan worden als leave-in, maar ook als een normale conditioner die je weer uitwast. De geur is erg anders dan de meeste producten – het doet me denken aan rooibosthee en kaneel. Hoewel ik meestal meer hou van frisse geuren, vind ik deze ook erg lekker ruiken!
Although the leave-in does contain coconut oil and avocado oil as the second and third ingredient, I find that the formulation of the product overall is very lightweight. I’ve used it mostly as a leave-in conditioner, and it doesn’t weigh my hair down at all. I’ve also tried it as a rinse-out conditioner a couple of times, and that works really well for my fine hair as well. My hair gets overconditioned easily, so I like to use leave-ins instead of normal conditioner every now and then.
Hoewel de leave-in kokosolie en avocado-olie bevat als tweede en derde ingrediënt, merk ik dat de formulering van het hele product alsnog erg licht is. Ik heb het vooral gebruikt als leave-in conditioner, en het verzwaart mijn haar totaal niet. Ik heb het ook een paar keer geprobeerd als normale conditioner, en dat werkt ook erg goed voor mijn dunne haren. Mijn haar raakt makkelijk overgeconditioneerd, dus ik vind het fijn om af en toe leave-ins te gebruiken in plaats van een normale conditioner.
The conditioner contains keratin amino acids, a very small protein that works for many different hair types. In short, amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and keratin is the protein that our hair mostly consists of. I find that my hair tends to love products with keratin in them, and this leave-in is no exception. It gives my fine hair the strength and bounce it needs to curl up well.
De conditioner bevat keratin amino acids, een erg kleine proteïne die voor veel verschillende haartypes werkt. Kort samengevat zijn aminozuren de bouwstenen van proteïne, en keratine is de proteïne waar ons haar vooral uit bestaat. Ik merk dat mijn haar het erg goed doet op producten met keratine erin, en deze leave-in is geen uitzondering. Het geeft mijn haar de sterkte en elasticiteit die het nodig heeft om goed op te krullen.
ReFlex Curl Styling Serum
The ReFlex Curl Styling Serum is a multifunctional product. The TréLuxe website describes it as a styler to be used after conditioning and before gel, but I know many people use it as a refresher as well. I personally use it in place of a leave-in conditioner or cream (I always only use one of those). The consistency is quite fluid and is similar to a very thin gel. The scent is strong and sweet, but if you are sensitive to scents there is now a fragrance-free version of this product as well.
Het ReFlex Curl Styling Serum is een multifunctioneel product. De TréLuxe website omschrijft het als een styler die je moet gebruiken na conditioner en voor gel, maar ik weet dat veel mensen het ook gebruiken als refresher. Ik gebruik het zelf in plaats van een leave-in conditioner of crème (ik gebruik altijd maar één van beide). De consistentie is nogal vloeibaar en is vergelijkbaar met een erg dunne gel. De geur is sterk en zoet, maar als je gevoelig bent voor geuren is er nu ook een parfumvrije versie van dit product.
In theory, the serum is a lot more lightweight than the leave-in conditioner, as it doesn’t contain any oils. But in practice this product has weighed my hair down multiple times, making it feel way too soft when dry. It is possible I just used too much at the beginning or used it too close to my scalp, as it started happening less later on. At least I found that with my fine hair, I still need to be careful how much I use and how I use it. However, when it did work it really gave my curls quite a boost, as this serum also contains keratin amino acids.
In theorie is dit serum een stuk lichter dan de leave-in conditioner, omdat het geen olie bevat. Maar in de praktijk heeft dit product mijn haar wel een aantal keer verzwaard, en voelde het veel te zacht als het droog was. Het is mogelijk dat ik in het begin gewoon te veel gebruikte of het te dicht bij mijn hoofdhuid gebruikte, want later gebeurde dit minder. Ik merkte in ieder geval dat ik met mijn dunne haar voorzichtig moest zijn met hoeveel en hoe ik het gebruikte. Maar als het wel werkte gaf het mijn krullen een behoorlijke boost, omdat dit serum ook keratin amino acids bevat.
Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel
The Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel has a very jelly-like consistency that reminds me a bit of the Curlsmith Styling Souffle. It has quite a sweet but somewhat fresh scent that is quite strong. I personally don’t find it too strong, but like the serum, this gel also has a fragrance-free version if that’s what you prefer.
De Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel heeft een jam-achtige consistentie die me wat doet denken aan de Curlsmith Styling Souffle. Het heeft een behoorlijk zoete, maar ook licht frisse geur die vrij sterk is. Persoonlijk vind ik het niet te sterk, maar net zoals het serum bestaat deze gel ook in een parfumvrije versie als je dat liever hebt.
I find that the gel is really easy to apply. It is on the thicker side, but it is not sticky at all and I don’t need water to spread it evenly over my hands and apply it to my hair. Like the previous products, this gel also contains keratin amino acids. I personally consider this gel to be pretty strong hold: it gives me a good cast that is easy to break but still leaves me with defined, relatively frizz-free curls even on second day hair. However, some people consider this gel to be light to medium hold, so it seems like it really depends on your hair properties how this gel performs on your hair. For my fine hair though, this is one of my favourite gels I have tried.
Ik vind dat de gel makkelijk aan te brengen is. Hij is aan de dikkere kant, maar hij is totaal niet plakkerig en ik heb geen water nodig om het gelijkmatig over mijn handen te verdelen en op mijn haar aan te brengen. Net zoals de vorige producten bevat deze gel ook keratin amino acids. Persoonlijk vind ik deze gel een sterke hold hebben: het geeft me een goede cast die makkelijk te breken is, maar me nog steeds gedefinieerde, relatief pluisvrije krullen geeft zelfs op dag twee. Sommige mensen vinden deze gel echter lichte tot medium hold hebben, dus het lijkt erg aan je haartype te liggen hoe deze gel het doet op je haar. Voor mijn fijne haar is het echter een van mijn favoriete gels die ik tot nog toe heb geprobeerd.
My experience using samples
Personally I ordered my samples through CGproefjes.nl, but this is not an ad for them and there are other websites that offer samples, so I won’t review the website itself – just my experience using samples.
I think samples are a great way to try out a product before buying a full size of it. Usually the product gets transferred to a small plastic or aluminium tub that contains about 30ml, so you can try it out for a couple of wash days. However, the downside of ordering a sample is that transferring it to a different packaging can mess with the preservation. This is usually not an issue, as in most cases 30ml gets finished soon enough. But if you only need a little bit of product, it might still take you a while to finish. In this case, the TréLuxe products contain fermented tomato extract and after almost a year I found that the gel had fermented a little too much and started smelling like alcohol. So if you do order samples, please learn from my mistakes and finish the sample as soon as you can to avoid the product going bad 😉
Zelf heb ik de proefjes besteld via CGproefjes.nl, maar dit is geen advertentie voor hen en er zijn andere website die proefjes aanbieden, dus ik ga de website zelf niet reviewen – alleen mijn ervaring met proefjes.
Ik denk dat proefjes een goede manier zijn om een product uit te proberen voor er een grote verpakking van te kopen. Meestal wordt het product in een klein plastic of aluminium potje gedaan met een inhoud van ongeveer 30ml, zodat je het kunt uitproberen voor een aantal wasdagen. Het nadeel van zo’n proefje is dat het overschenken in een andere verpakking invloed kan hebben op de houdbaarheid. Meestal is dit geen enkel probleem, omdat 30ml snel genoeg op gaat. Maar als je maar een klein beetje product nodig hebt, kan het alsnog lang duren om op te maken. In dit geval bevatten de TréLuxe producten gefermenteerd tomatenextract, en na bijna een jaar kwam ik erachter dat de gel iets te veel was gaan fermenteren en naar alcohol rook. Dus als je proefjes bestelt, leer alsjeblieft van mijn fouten en maak het proefje zo snel mogelijk op om te voorkomen dat het niet goed meer is 😉
Conclusion
I think these three TréLuxe products are really great products that work well for my fine hair, but they definitely can be used for other hair types as well. The keratin amino acids in the products work very well for my hair, and the formulation is lightweight enough. However, the serum was a bit hard to use so I’m not sure if I would purchase a full size of that one. The leave-in conditioner is definitely going on my shortlist for purchasing later, but I don’t use a lot of leave-in and cream in general so it might be a while before I need it. The gel is one of my favourites though, and that one I definitely will purchase a full size of in the future – as long as I can actually finish it before it expires!
Ik denk dat deze drie TréLuxe producten heel goede producten zijn die goed werken voor mijn fijne haar, maar ze kunnen zeker ook voor andere haartypes worden gebruikt. De keratin amino acids in de producten werken erg goed voor mijn haar, en de formulering is licht genoeg. Het serum was echter wat moeilijk te gebruiken, dus ik twijfel of ik een grote verpakking hiervan zou kopen. De leave-in conditioner gaat wel op mijn lijst om later te kopen, maar ik gebruik niet veel leave-in en crème dus het duurt misschien een tijdje voor ik nieuwe nodig heb. De gel is echter een van mijn favorieten, en in de toekomst zal ik hier zeker een grote verpakking van kopen – als ik hem tenminste op tijd op kan krijgen!
